[Terence Zelman]
Scotford Shell is a 250,000 barrel per day petrochemical facility, 24/7, 365 day a year.

[Terence Zelman]
We don’t shut down for anything. Machinery here is labored all the time.

It needs to perform at its best and we need to be able to put barrels down the pipeline to be successful.

The Shell Scotford Upgrader processes bitumen from the Shell Albian oil sands into a crude oil. At the heart of the complex operation are the utility air compressors.
[Terence Zelman]
Our utility air compressors, they provide plant air and instrument air to the entire facility.

More footage of the infrastructure of the plant, footage of Terence, Bill and Scott, dressed in safety gear and a close-up of a single component.
Interview with Scott Kwas

Technical Advisor / Shell lubricants
[Scott Kwas]
A lot of times when these units go down, the plants go down. A very critical piece of equipment.

[Text displays]
An issue with the compressors’ bearings was causing unplanned outages. The team needed to find out why. Quickly.
[Terence Zelman]
And when we finally took the equipment apart and found the varnish issues from the degradation of the oil, we knew that we needed to talk to the experts.

[Scott Kwas]
So an issue like this takes a real in-depth and methodical approach, involving all the key stakeholders. Right away I knew to contact Bill Stein.

[Bill Stein]
The thing that intrigued us most about the Scotford issue was what was at stake. As a piece of equipment comes offline and has to be replaced, that translates into a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of expense – even lost production. The first step in any product development application is to actually understand where you’re going.
Close-up of Bill Stein against the background of the plant. More panning footage of the infrastructure of the plant. Mid-view in profile of Scott Kwas dressed in safety gear, shining a small lamp on plant equipment that he is inspecting. Close-up in profile of Bill Stein as he speaks. Footage of the three men walking through the darkened plant.
[Terence Zelman]
We went out to the unit, we looked at the health of the machine and we reviewed vibration trends.
Footage of the three men in the plant, inspecting the machine together, cutting to a close-up of part of the machine. Close-up of Terence Zelman against the background of the plant.
[Scott Kwas]
Bill ran in-depth oil analysis, looking for those indicators for varnish potential and identifying any optimized solution in our lubricant portfolio.
Close-up of slides under a microscope cutting to a close-up in profile of Bill looking down the microscope. Footage of Bill and Terence in the plant, both inspecting bottles of liquid. Extreme close-up of Scott Kwas in profile.
[Bill Stein]
Once we have a product that we’ve put together in the laboratory that satisfies all the specifications, we want to make sure that that product translates to trouble-free operation for our customers.

Armed with research and resolve, the team collaborated and decided to try a recently developed lubricant in the air compressors – Shell Turbo S4 X 32
[Scott Kwas]
With the new formulation in place, we kept a constant and very frequent dialogue with Scotford Upgrader and Terrence, continuously monitoring the oil for success.
Footage of Terence and Scott and Bill in the plant, all dressed in safety gear, involved in discussion while monitoring equipment.
[Terence Zelman]
We were skeptics at first. We’d never seen this kind of runtime on our equipment before.

[Bill Stein]
We’ve actually hit a home run with the Turbo S4 product line. This is a product that works and it’s a product that’s a problem solver.

The solution found by the Shell Lubricants team improved equipment performance and reliability of the Scotford Upgrader.
[Terence Zelman]
Currently, to date, we’re saving $20,000 every month that this equipment keeps running.
Close-up of Terence Zelman against the background of the plant.
[Terence Zelman]
We’re up to about $400,000 in savings at this point and we do not see a failure coming down the road anytime soon.

More panning footage of the infrastructure of the plant, text displaying over the shot.

$400,000 savings
[Scott Kwas]
A strong collaboration between all three of the parties was very key, Terrence having the knowledge and the boots on the down here at the plant, then all which I bring out [?] with the lubricants and then with Bill with the formulation of the products, the three aligned to form a successful outcome.
Low angle wide footage of the three men, Scott, Terence and Bill, dressed smartly, approaching the shot as they walk up a passageway. Close-up of Terence holding a component in one of his hands, speaking to someone out of shot, cutting to a close-up of the component as he points to it with his other hand. Low angle close-up of Scott, cutting to close-up of a document which one of the men is holding. Low angle close-up of Bill, wearing safety gear and googles. Low angle footage of the three men, smartly dressed, sitting around a table, floor to ceiling glass-panelled windows forming the background behind them, a cloudy blue sky visible through the windows.
